Welcome

Residency Program Directors: Drs. Ruth Tuomala, Amy Stagg, and Joan Bengtson

Welcome! Thank you for visiting our website.

The Brigham & Women's Hospital/Massachusetts General Hospital Integrated Residency Program in Obstetrics and Gynecology is an ACGME accredited postgraduate training program affiliated with Harvard Medical School. We select 11 medical students each year to become residents with us. In addition to our major training sites at BWH and MGH, residents also participate in clinical activities at Brigham & Women’s/Faulkner Hospital, Boston Children’s Hospital, and Newton-Wellesley Hospital.

We are committed to both diversity and inclusion. We strive to attract to our program trainees who are from diverse backgrounds, who will work together seamlessly with each other and with faculty to provide the best, most culturally sensitive care to the diverse patient populations we are privileged to serve in Boston. We are equally committed to creating an educational environment that is inclusive and supportive of everyone and celebrates the achievements of all.

Our mission is to train our residents to become fully qualified, clinically superior obstetrician-gynecologists who are leaders in women’s health. We are uniquely qualified to foster a climate of clinical and academic excellence because of the confluence of multiple factors:

  • Our two main clinical sites are world renowned teaching hospitals affiliated with Harvard Medical School.
  • A large Ob/Gyn faculty devoted to resident education who have diverse clinical and research interests.
  • Sub-specialty fellowship training programs in all fields, including Global Health.
  • The facilities and faculty of Harvard Medical School and myriad research centers located within its affiliated hospitals, which are part of the framework that we utilize for resident education research projects.
  • The students at Harvard Medical School, and a vibrant Resident as Teacher program.
  • A large and loyal group of alumni, many of whom are still within our institutions.
  • A depth and breadth of clinical experiences second to none.

Our primary hospitals serve the majority of patients from Boston and the surrounding towns, and our own clinical populations come from multiple cultures and economic conditions. We are the major referral center for Eastern Massachusetts and the surrounding New England area as well as a renowned referral site for other national and international patients.

The greatest strength of our program are the wonderful and talented residents themselves. Our residents are terrific individuals who, through the course of 4 years, become a cohesive team of best friends and ardent supporters of each other. They work incredibly hard, always with a smile. They enjoy each other’s company both in and outside of work. They are fun to work with, teach, and learn from. We think you will enjoy getting to know them.

I am so pleased that you are visiting our website. We are proud to have been rated the #1 residency program in OB/GYN by US News and World Reports and Doximity for two years in a row. We hope to show you why!
